A visit from Sue Rangeley

Ever wonder how far you can push embroidery? Ever consider how to create delicate or sturdy three dimensional embellishments? We at North Shore Needle Arts had a chance to find answers to these questions when Sue Rangeley, invited to present at our Guild, accepted the invitation.

In a captivating presentation, internationally renowned embroidery artist Sue Rangeley delved into the delicate and intricate world of her embroidered works and embellishments. She shared insights into her creative process, emphasizing the patience and precision required to craft her signature designs, which often blend traditional techniques with contemporary flair.

Her studio practice is a harmonious balance between meticulous handwork and experimentation, where she draws inspiration from nature, textiles, and global cultures. Included in her presentation were examples of work inspired by the floral beauties of the famous Hidcote Manor and Sissinghurst Castle gardens in the United Kingdom. “Meandering bias ribbons of machine-stitched organza echo the organic textures of plants; sketched studies inspire design directions.“–Sue Rangeley

She explained the development of her palette for the various embroideries she has created and provided this image of this work inspired by Hidcote Manor gardens as an example.

Sue is committed to preserving the rich history of embroidery while pushing its artistic boundaries.

Her recent book Embroidery Atelier – Visions & Passions gives a glimpse of her studio practice and invites you to explore contemporary embroidery. She hopes it inspires you to pick up your needle and stitch.
