Take A Line For A Walk

Line is a fundamental mark or stroke that defines the shape, contour or outline of a form and can convey motion, direction, or emotion.

Burdened Children by Paul Klee 1930; Property of the Tate Museum

In this workshop lead by our own Catherin Nicholls, we will be digging into this favourite element of design – line and “taking it for a walk”.  We will be making all sorts of  marks using  stitch, simple print techniques, paint, marker, pencils and all sorts of ways to create line on fabric. We will look at the quality of lines; singularity, repeated and in combination.

Students can approach this workshop as a series of samples and explorations or work with intention towards a goal. You never know for sure but samples often have a way of coming together to create a unique textile masterpiece!

To this end consider the outwardly simple line and all the possible directions it might take and how such a “simple” mark can convey so much.

There will be a short supply list for this course if you wish to work along, or you are welcome to listen and make notes. Students might like to use visual source materials in the form of printed images; their own or copyright free images.  Suggestions as to suitable images and the supply list will be sent upon registration.
